This song was originally written by Dave Grusin and Sally Stevens as a source cue for the 1981 thriller, "Absence of Malice," staring Paul Newman, Sally Field, Bob Balaban and directed by the legendary Sydney Pollack. In preparation for James Taylor's first Christmas Album, Dave asked if Sally would write a second verse, as the original song was quite short. The song was then submitted to James who loved it and included it on his album.
